It was still a little cool and rainy today. The Star and Banner chose to visit the historical markers in Taneytown, Maryland. United States Major-General George Gordon Meade set up his headquarters in the Taneytown area, and was near Taneytown when the fighting began at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.
Taneytown Memorial Park is in Taneytown along Maryland Route 140, which is shown running from the middle right to the upper left in this picture. The wayside marker describes the Pipe Creek line, and the location of Meade’s headquarters. The road above the wayside, where the white pickup is located, is the Harney Road. This is the road that Major-General Winfield Scott Hancock, and later Major-General George Gordon Meade took to Gettysburg.
