Sherfy’s Peach Orchard: Spring Update

It’s been almost two months since we last showed you the Sherfy Peach Orchard.The Emmitsburg Road is on the left with Birney Avenue in the foreground. This image was taken facing north approximately 5:00 PM on Friday, April 28, 2016.

Most trees in this section of orchard did not have pink flowers/blossoms during a few visits we made this month.This image was taken facing east at approximately 5:00 PM on Friday, April 28, 2016.

You’ll notice that many of the peach tree leaves in this photograph are green…This image was taken facing east at approximately 5:00 PM on Friday, April 28, 2016.

…But a number of trees have red spots and curling leaves. A common fungus is responsible for this “peach leaf curl.” Development of this fungus stops when the weather becomes warmer and dryer.This image was taken facing east at approximately 5:00 PM on Friday, April 28, 2016.

The trees are also home to caterpillar nests this time of year.This image was taken facing south at approximately 5:00 PM on Friday, April 28, 2016.
