Returning the 90th Pennsylvania’s Right Flank Marker at Ziegler’s Grove

The monument with the eagle on top in the top left of this photograph is to the The 90th Pennsylvania Infantry. Their Ziegler’s Grove monument is located along the “connecting roadway” (shown here) between the Taneytown Road, Hancock Avenue, and the Emmitsburg Road. The right flank marker to the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry’s Ziegler’s Grove monument lays in the foreground. This image was taken facing southwest at approximately 1:15 PM on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

Restoring this flank marker to its original location in “Ziegler’s Ravine” is part of the National Park Service’s plan to restore the Ziegler’s Grove area following the deconstruction of the Cyclorama parking lot. You will notice the regrading that’s occurred in this area to restore the dip in the ground (ravine). The Taneytown Road is behind us. The 90th Pennsylvania’s monument can be seen in the left of frame along the connecting roadway. This image was taken facing west at approximately 1:15 PM on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

But where was this flank marker before? The 90th Pennsylvania monument is in the center of this photograph (in front of the Cyclorama Building). If you click on this image to enlarge it, you can see a truck along the connecting roadway on the left. The marker was located somewhere within the rocks and trees below the truck. Just out of sight to the left of the truck…This image was taken facing south at approximately 3:45 PM on Thursday, February 23, 2012.

…was a set of steps that would take visitors from the Cyclorama Parking Lot to the Old Visitors Center Parking Lot. We looked through a number of the photographs in our archives and couldn’t locate the 90th Pennsylvania’s right flank marker. If you have a photograph of it, please get in touch. The monuments visible in this photograph on the south side of the roadway (right side of this photograph) will be returned to Ziegler’s Grove soon. This image was taken facing southeast at approximately 3:45 PM on Thursday, February 23, 2012.
It was a difficult marker to find because it was “partially buried” (third item down on this list). This screencap was taken from page 180 of the “Final Disposition of the Gettysburg Cyclorama Building: Environmental Assessment (GETT179110)” (2012 GNMP).

The National Park Service used maps and measured to determine where to place this marker. The ground was soft, so digging the hole for the flank marker didn’t take too long. This image was taken facing north at approximately 1:15 PM on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

The flank marker needs a foundation. The gray stone being placed will provide stability for the monument. For you stone nerds out there, it’s a 2A modified packing stone. This type of stone will harden when it gets wet. You don’t want to set the marker in concrete, because if it is hit by a vehicle and the marker is set in concrete, the marker will break. By not setting it in concrete, it allows the monument to have some give if it’s struck. This image was taken facing westat approximately 1:15 PM on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

With the marker set, it’s time to remove the straps. You can probably guess why it was premature of the Foundation’s volunteers to place a tree here. As this sapling grows, its root structure is going to disrupt this flank marker. This image was taken facing north at approximately 1:15 PM on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.
