Today we’ll start from the Granite Schoolhouse Lane and use this break in the wall that we’ve used before to take a look at this project. This view was taken facing east at approximately 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

You will notice small white signs posted around the crest of the hill. This view was facing northwest at approximately 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

Please do not visit Powers Hill until these “Area Closed” signs are removed and the project is complete. Until then, the best you can do is take telephoto pictures of monuments like the 77th New York from the base of the hill like we did. Rigby’s Battery A of the Maryland Light Artillery is visible on the eastern portion of the hill, where the most noticeable clearing since our last update has occurred. This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

Here’s one last look at the 77th New York before we move around to the other side of the hill. This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

Just past the Slocum Headquarters marker (on the left, though the actual headquarters position was on Powers Hill “about 200 yards westerly”) … This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

… you can still make out the location of the home and buildings that used to sit on this property before they were acquired by the National Park Service. This view was taken facing west at approximately 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

It’s been almost two years since we started covering this project, so it is exciting to see the results of this work to restore Powers Hill to its 1863 appearance. It is becoming much easier to illustrate to visitors why the United States would have placed artillery on the eastern portion of the hill. This view was taken facing south at approximately 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.
