Old NPS Visitor Center Update, Grass Arrives

The grass planted on Monday began to show itself on Friday. This view was taken facing east at approximately 6:20 PM on Friday, May 15, 2009.

In today’s post, we show that the recent rains have enabled the planted grass to reveal itself through the straw covering the demolition site of the old National Park Service Visitor Center on the Taneytown Road.

The recent rains haven’t allowed much work on the Patterson House, or the Peace Light to be cleaned, but the grass is growing. This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 6:20 PM on Friday, May 15, 2009.

We know we’re jumping ahead a couple of seasons, but if we get a lot of snow this winter, will this be the new spot for the local young people to bring their sleds? This photograph was taken facing west at approximately 6:20 PM on Friday, May 15, 2009.

Of course the Park Service might ruin this opportunity by doing something inconvenient like moving monuments or markers back to this location. This photograph was taken facing southwest at approximately 6:20 PM on Friday, May 15, 2009.

Locals used to sled near the Oak Ridge Tower, but the trees planted on the slope of Oak Ridge has not made it as good a sledding area as it once was. This photograph was taken facing southwest at approximately 6:20 PM on Friday, May 15, 2009.

But back to the kiddies sledding down the hill. There is convenient parking at the old Cyclorama Visitor Center lot. And when they reach the bottom of the hill, and need to use the restroom or get something to eat, they can cross Steinwehr Avenue to the McDonalds.
