In September of 2008, we visited the often overlooked Jones’ Battalion Avenue, just off the Old Harrisburg Road northeast of Gettysburg. When we visited in 2008, no artillery pieces were on display in this area. Today we’ll take another walk down Jones’ Battalion Avenue and look at the pieces that were returned to the field this summer.
As we all know, the real reason the North Gettysburg Trail was constructed (the trail leads from the town of Gettysburg out the Old Harrisburg Road and ends at about the center point of this photo) … This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 4:00 PM on Thursday, November 8, 2011.

… or the Twin Oaks subdivision in the back right of this photo. It was obviously constructed to provide access to the markers and plaques to Lieutenant-Colonel Hilary Pollard Jones’ Artillery Battalion of the Confederate Second Corps. There were five vacant artillery gun spots in 2008, when we last visited Jones’ Battalion. Three of them have had guns returned, but this is one of two positions which have not had artillery on the field for quite some time.
