Fence Building and Painting at the Friends of Gettysburg Volunteer Workday



This white fence borders the lane that used to lead from the Bryan Farm to the Emmitsburg Road. National Park Service Volunteers finished constructing and painting it Saturday. This view was taken facing east at approximately 5:30 PM on Saturday, June 6, 2009.

In what has become an annual spring event, 250 volunteers from the Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg donated their time to build fences, and paint fences on the Gettysburg Battlefield. We’ll show you some before and after pictures.

Saturday morning we visited one of the locations for fence construction, the McMillan Orchard area on Seminary Ridge. This view was taken facing southeast at approximately 6:30 AM on Saturday, June 6, 2009.



The Gettysburg Recreation Park is in the left background. The Round Tops are barely visible in the fog in the center background, and the McMillan House is the white object in the trees in the right background. The National Park Service did a very good job preparing the site by having piles of gravel, and digging holes for the fence posts. This view was taken facing east at approximately 6:30 AM on Saturday, June 6, 2009.

So let’s go to the other (north) side of the McMillan House and see what we can see of the fences from the crest of Seminary Ridge. This view was taken facing southeast at approximately 6:30 AM on Saturday, June 6, 2009.

We also drove by the Pennsylvania Monument on Cemetery Ridge to see a line of “worm” or “saw buck” fences that they were preparing to construct. This view was taken facing north at approximately 7:55 AM on Saturday, May 23, 2009.
