Colonel Philip Brown commanded the 157th New York Infantry Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was born in Smithfield, New York in 1823. Before the war he was a graduate of Madison University (now Colgate) and was Principal of the University School at the beginning of the Civil War. He was mustered into United States service on September 19, 1862, and was mustered out on June 8, 1865. He died on April 9, 1881. This view, circa the 1860s, is courtesy of Stuart Dempsey.

Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide Stuart Dempsey is our host for a series on the Eleventh Army Corps during the Battle of Gettysburg. Stuart had two relatives in the Eleventh Corps (73rd Ohio Infantry Regiment) and both were killed/mortally wounded at Gettysburg. They are both buried in the National Cemetery. Stuart has been a Licensed Battlefield Guide since 2004.

Private George Philo Smith, was wounded at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, and escaped capture behind enemy lines in the area of Blocher’s Run. He was a member of Company D of the 157th New York Infantry Regiment. This view, circa the 1860s, is courtesy of Ms. Diane Metzger. .
