Culp’s Hill Part 1: Presented by Licensed Battlefield Guide Charlie Fennell

Dr. Charles C. Fennell received his Ph.D. in history from West Virginia University in 1992. His dissertation was titled, “The Battle of Culp’s Hill.” Dr. Fennell believes that Culp’s Hill saw some of the most important if not the most important actions during the Battle of Gettysburg. Here Charlie poses beneath the statue of United States Brigadier General George Sears Greene. This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 9:30 AM on Sunday, March 22, 2008.

Today we begin what we hope will be a somewhat lengthy series on the fighting at Culp’s Hill. Licensed Battlefield Guide Dr. Charles Fennell will take us on a walk around the area, starting at the summit of Culp’s Hill, near the observation tower.

This map will show the locations of the videos we will show on the tour. Videos #1-#3 were taken on the summit of Culp’s Hill near the observation tower. This map was created facing north at approximately 7:00 PM on Monday, March 23, 2008.

Dr. Charles Fennell has been a Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide since 1986. He is standing on the southwest side of the Culp’s Hill observation tower. This view was taken facing northeast at approximately 9:30 AM on Sunday, March 22, 2008.
In Video #1, Charlie introduces us to the “fishhook” defensive line, the Culp’s Hill area, and Culp’s Hill’s relationship to Cemetery Hill and the Round Tops. The noise in the background is a Boy Scout group that was coming down the tower as we were filming. This view was taken facing northeast to northwest to southwest at approximately 9:30 AM on Sunday, March 22, 2008.

Charlie has now moved to the Culp’s Hill wayside exhibit that is located northwest of the Greene monument. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 9:30 AM on Sunday, March 22, 2008.
In Video #2, Charlie explains a little about George Sears Greene, and his desire to have his men build breastworks on Culp’s Hill. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 9:30 AM on Sunday, March 22, 2008.

Charlie is now posing on the southeast side of the George Sears Greene monument. This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 9:30 AM on Sunday, March 22, 2008.
In Video #3, Charlie relates how when the monument was dedicated, the survivors of the brigade were very grateful to Greene for having them build breastworks. This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 9:30 AM on Sunday, March 22, 2008.

Charlie then leads us down the trail towards the monument to the 60th New York Infantry Regiment. This view was taken facing east at approximately 9:30 AM on Sunday, March 22, 2008.
