Cows Return to the Gettysburg Battlefield

The cows probably did not appreciate being brought out in the rain. This group is on the east side of East Confederate Avenue. In this area, the 57th North Carolina marched toward East Cemetery Hill (the trees of which are shown in the far right background) the night of July 2, 1863. This view was taken from the northeast facing southwest at approximately 4:20 PM on Monday, April 28, 2008.

It was a wet and rainy Monday, and the cows returned to Gettysburg National Military Park. The National Park Service rents out land to farmers for crops or their animals. One hopes spring is here to stay when the farmers decide to bring their cows and leave them until the late fall. The cows we observed today were on East Confederate Avenue near Culp’s Hill.
