Bike Week: Calm Before the Storm

Bike Week begins today in Gettysburg, and those interested in keeping this event alive have tried to be proactive in setting out signs asking the bikers to be quieter as they enter the town. Where the signs are also needed are before one enters the battlefield, but either way, the signs don’t seem to have had much effect. More than a few bikers that showed up Thursday were still loud and still throttling their engines. This view was taken from the southwest facing northeast at approximately 8:00 AM on Friday, July 11, 2008.

Although Gettysburg Bike Week was supposed to start yesterday, only a few bikers had made their appearance in the borough. More than a few Gettysburg residents dread Bike Week. The riders are extremely loud and not very considerate when it comes to “noise pollution.” Some signs are asking the bikers to “Throttle Down in Town,” but we did not notice that the bikers who showed up yesterday paid any attention to the signs. The signs don’t ask the bikers to “throttle down” on the battlefield, where it is very difficult for visitors to learn about what happened here while they are distracted by all the noise that the bikers bring. The Gettysburg Daily took photographs today of some of the preparations being made for bike week, including some of the vendor sites.

Believe it or not, there are three of the “throttle down” signs here along the Chambersburg Pike as one enters town at Seminary Ridge. But can you pick them out? And could you pick them out if you were riding at 30 to 40 miles per hour and looking at everything else in this area?
