Adams County Civil War Taverns Part 5: Gettysburg LBG John Winkleman



Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide John Winkleman is our host for the series on Adams County Civil War Taverns. He is standing on the north side of the the Chambersburg Pike or Cashtown Road. He is pointing to Herr’s Tavern, which is on the southeast corner of the junction of the Chambersburg Pike and Herr’s Ridge Road, which meets the Chambersburg Pike behind John. This view was taken facing south at approximately 1:45 PM on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide John Winkleman is a native of New Jersey and a resident of Adams County, Pennsylvania since 2000. He is U.S. Navy, Vietnam War Veteran. John has been a Licensed Battlefield Guide since 2004.

In 1987 a storm collapsed much of this west wall of Herr’s Tavern. Herr’s Ridge Road is running from left to right in the foreground. This view was taken facing southeast at approximately 1:45 PM on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.



The 1860 federal population census shows that Frederick Herr was “white,” born in Pennsylvania, that he was a Farmer, that he was 73 years old, and that he lived in the same dwelling and was part of the same family with Susan Herr (1797-), born in Pennsylvania; Rebecca Herr (1839-), born in Pennsylvania; Susan Herr (1846-), born in Pennsylvania. This view was taken facing south at approximately 1:45 PM on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.



The 1860 federal population census also shows that Frederick Herr’s real estate had a value of $3000, and his personal estate had a value of $2500. This made him the 48th wealthiest person in Cumberland Township. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 1:45 PM on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.
