Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide Stuart Dempsey is by the monument to Captain Lewis Heckman’s Battery K, First Ohio Light Artillery. Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide Stuart Dempsey is our host for a series on the Eleventh Army Corps during the Battle of Gettysburg. Stuart had two relatives in the Eleventh Corps (73rd Ohio Infantry Regiment) and both were killed/mortally wounded at Gettysburg. They are both buried in the National Cemetery. Stuart has been a Licensed Battlefield Guide since 2004.

In today’s Eleventh Corps post, Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide Stuart Dempsey describes the fighting of Heckman’s Ohio Battery, and the position of Colonel George Von Amsberg’s Brigade on the afternoon of July 1, 1863.

Video #73 was taken at Pennsylvania Hall on the campus of Gettysburg College. This map was created facing north at approximately 11:00 PM on Saturday, September 18, 2010.
In Video #72 (Videos #1-#71 were shown in our previous Eleventh Corps posts) Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide Stuart Dempsey is standing on the southwest corner of the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Carlisle Street. He describes the action of Heckman’s Ohio Battery in this area. This view was taken facing southeast to east to northeast to southeast to southwest to south at approximately 6:30 AM on Sunday, August 1, 2010.
The photographer is standing on Carlisle Street near its intersection with Lincoln Avenue which runs right to left (east to west) at the traffic light. The monument to Heckman’s Ohio Battery is to the left of Carlisle Street. Heckman’s battery was placed somewhere in this area, and possibly on the rise where the camera position is, firing at Confederates who were moving on and near the Carlisle Road/Carlisle Street towards this position. This view was taken facing north at approximately 6:30 AM on Sunday, August 1, 2010.
This is the same camera position as the previous photograph, however the view is towards the town of Gettysburg. Union soldiers from the Eleventh Corps retreated towards town along the Carlisle Road/Carlisle Street. Notice how the ground rises towards the center square/circle/diamond in the middle of town where the United States flag is barely visible on its flagpole in the middle of the square.
