George A. Woodward (1835-1916) was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and his father, George Washington Woodward (1809-1875), was Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1863-1867. George A. Woodward (1835-1916) was practicing law in Philadelphia when the war began and he was commissioned as a Captain in the 2nd Pennsylvania Reserves. He is a Major in the 2nd Pennsylvania Reserves at Gettysburg. His unit fought in the Plum Run Valley/Valley of Death and Wheatfield area on July 2, 1863. This image was taken circa the 1860s.
Arlington National Cemetery, overlooking Washington, D.C., has many connections to Gettysburg and to the Gettysburg Campaign. There are many more connections than to only Robert E. Lee’s residence, and John F. Kennedy’s grave. Almost every row in the older sections have someone buried there who had a link to Gettysburg.

George A. Woodward was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on September 25, 1863, and to Colonel on December 4, 1863. He retired from active duty in the United States Army on March 2, 1879, and was advanced to the rnk of Brigadier General on April 23, 1904. He was breveted Colonel on March 2, 1867 for his actions during the Battle of Gettysburg. This view was taken facing north at approximately 4:00 PM on Sunday, February 27, 2011.
