On Thursday morning at 7:30, seasonal ranger Bill Hewitt gave a program to a hardy few near Meade’s Equestrian Monument on Cemetery Ridge. His program, “Overview for July 3, Union & Confederate Preparations,” discussed General Meade’s and General Lee’s plans for this very decisive day in history.

The Ewell’s morning attack was to be coordinated with Confederates under Longstreet at the south end of the field. The Copse of Trees is to the left in this view, and the single tree growing out of the famous outer angle in the stone wall is shown on the right side of this view. The farthest open area between them is Joseph Sherfy’s Peach Orchard where Confederate Artillery was preparing to shell the Union lines. Lee finally decides to attack across the hay covered fields above our group. They will emerge out of the treeline on Seminary Ridge 145 years ago today.
